Blogger arrested in Greece!

These days the greek blogging world is really upset. Antonis Tsipropoulos, the administrator of an RSS aggregating service (blogme.gr) was sued, arrested and jailed for hosting a link to a blog with allegedly offending content. He was jailed for a text he DID NOT write himself!

Any internet user knows that an RSS service collects information. It's first time that an RSS service is sued, for content that cannot control or manage. The administrator of such a service doesn't have the responsibility or necessarily supports the content of other blogs. It's like suing google for the content of its search results!

Let's see the facts: A blog offends (?) X (in fact uses satire and irony to mock a well-known greek person), that blog cannot be sued because it is hosted in the States, so X sues a completely innocent greek aggregation service.

We don't know who the offended actually is. He is referred as a prominent person and he probably is. But let's face the truth: a democratic country that Greece is supposed to be, arrests and jails a blogger! For what? For hosting another blog!

This is incredible. Please keep us updated.

It reminds me of this case in Denmark: Danish ISP Must Block AllofMP3.com.

In China, citizens can't visit sites that are legal in other countries, but that the Chinese government does not approve. That policy is now being brought to Denmark.

Unfortunately, it seems that this policy will become dominant all over the world. The freedom of expression that we enjoy in internet is under question.

The page doesn't offer a translation. Here is mine translation:

Blogme.gr was censored and stops temporarily to offer its free services.
Blogme was a free site which collected information regarding greek blogs. Any interested could easily find and read all greek blogs through blogme.gr. It offered to greek blogs directory services and RSS (for which it was sued).

This link has a conversation among the greek government spokesman Roussopoulos and foreign journalists at the opening session of Internet Governance Forum, taking place these days in Athens. It's characteristic of the way the greek government faces bloggers and the freedom of speech.
